Dr.Kamalaâ€™s unstinted, dedicated hard work, life sustaining her basic need to fulfill the dreams of the unfulfilled, coupled with a thirst to acquire the latest knowledge in her chosen field, enabled her to start the ART Laboratory at G.G.Fertility in 1986. An account of her memoirs has been published which serves as an invaluable guide providing encouragement to beginners in the field of ART. The initial struggle involved a number of overseas visits to other pioneering institutes, observation of their standards of work, quality control, results and last but not the least the two most important determinants of outcome-culture medium and maintenance and running of equipment. As commercial media was not freely available at the time and proved to be very expensive to procure, Dr. Kamala had to learn the technique of preparation from Monash University, Melbourne. It also required a life-sustaining salts and the Milli-Q water purification systems in order to be able to prepare it back home. Now the lab still prepares culture medium besides using commercial media for specialized procedures like ICSI /IMSI, PICSI, blastocyst cultures and PGS / PGD. When first started, the Laboratory was equipped to do only Intra uterine inseminations and thereafter progressed to incorporate the latest techniques in advanced infertility management. The staffs are constantly updated on newer techniques and follow a rigid protocol in Laboratory maintenance as well as storage of records. A separate theater complex is housed within the Lab for performing ovum pick-ups as well as for performing ART related surgical procedures. Documentation of all procedures with a printout of the treatment following transferred embryos and blastocysts are given to the couples. Our areas of interest include oocyte and ovarian tissue cryopreservation, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) endometrial regarding studies, cytoplasmic transfer, mitochondrial studies and more.
